Leave the foolish alone
I READ with interest about Ms Elaine Davidson, who has 1,903 body piercings, including the 500 in her genitals, and her admittance into the Guinness Book Of World Records ('Pain-loving woman has one big fear'; ST, Nov 14).
I do not know on what theoretical basis Ms Davidson, and those of her ilk, do outrageous and harmful things - in defiance of medical science, because to cause constant irritation, especially to tender parts of the body, can lead to cancer.
I, myself, have a theory with regard to such people who do preposterous and dangerous things just to attract attention or to support a lifestyle that invites illness, accident and death.
We have the relevant bodies advising and urging a change to safety, to protect individuals with a mindset bent on destroying themselves. We should desist from trying to save them from themselves and allow nature to take its course.
My theory is that the courting - seeking out for pleasure as opposed to necessity - of danger denotes stupidity. In this contextual observance, we allow danger to take its toll without interference, so that nature weeds out the weak in cognitive thinking.
Courting danger is a form of culling, and those who die in danger's arms do not reproduce and our species becomes progressively more intelligent, or at least less stupid.
Let us, therefore, do away with advisory overtures and safety campaigns - which they never listen to anyway - and allow those who want to court danger to do so.
We have a safety campaign on tobacco, where the weed is shown to have killed an astounding number of people. But who are we to thwart the smoker's desire to contract lung cancer and to die a premature death?
We would not only be interfering with his freedom of choice, but also interfering with nature's work of weeding out what it does not desire.
