Scared of lightning?

I used to be scared of bursting balloons and lightning. Today, I'm still scared of balloons, but lightning is not a problem because of a realisation one day:

If the lightning is close by, I will not have time to cover my ears and prevent the frightening thunderclap. If the lightning is far away enough for me to have time to cover my ears, it would be too soft to be actually frightening. Therefore, it is pointless for me to cover my ears.

From then on, I didn't bother to cover my ears anymore and lightning lost its fright.
