Monks - archaic?

Last year, when the benedictine monks took a stroll down the BizAd walkway towards LT17 for mass, I remember the number of heads they turned and the look of amazement from many. It suddenly struck me that the order of monks and nuns is so archaic that the modern person will struggle to even understand how they can still exist today.
