A Eulogy

Dear Anne-Anne,

Thank you for coming into my life, and being a friend.
When you came you had not been well treated,
but you were still so sweet, and proud; a grand dame.

Always quiet, and obedient, you’d always relish a good scratch.
Oh, how you’d carry a bone or Snoopy in your mouth; it was always so cute that we’d want to give you a scratch.
I’m sorry that you skin condition was always so bad.
And that your eyesight and hearing started to go.
There was nothing I could do about it.
I’m sorry I even stopped scratching you that often anymore.

We’ve been to the beach, to fireworks, to parks, to the vet.
You’ve always trusted me, and I love you.
Seeing you there, still warm;
lying still, asleep.
It was Time, dear Anne.
Go gently as you came;
as you always are.
